Best neighbourhoods for students
Lavapiés
Multicultural and arty, with cheap rents by central Madrid standards. Mix of Reina Sofía students and locals.
Chueca
Lively, walkable, with the city's best food scene. Slightly pricier than Lavapiés but very central.
Moncloa
Right next to UCM and UPM. Quieter, residential, lots of student halls and cheap menús del día.
Argüelles
Halfway between Moncloa and the centre. Excellent metro connections, mid-range rents, mature student crowd.
Getafe / Leganés
Out-of-centre but home to UC3M and several UPM faculties. Much cheaper rents; 25–35 min on Cercanías to Atocha.
Getting around
Transport
Madrid's metro is one of Europe's largest and is open until 1:30 AM (later on weekends). The Abono Joven costs just €20/month for under-26s and covers metro, bus, light rail and Cercanías across the entire region. Cycling is harder than in Barcelona due to hills and traffic, but BiciMAD is growing. UAM, UC3M and UAH are all reachable by Cercanías within 30–45 minutes from central Madrid.
