Gràcia
Bohemian, village-like feel just north of the centre. Lots of small plazas, cafés and indie bookshops. Popular with humanities students.
El Born / Gòtic
Medieval streets in the heart of the old town. Tiny flats, lots of nightlife. Watch out for tourist crowds.
Poble-sec
Below Montjuïc, foodie central with the famous Carrer de Blai pintxos street. Quieter and more affordable than Born.
Sant Antoni
Up-and-coming, lots of new cafés and a renovated covered market. Good metro connections to UB and UPC campuses.
Poblenou
Former industrial zone reborn as the 22@ tech district. Wide streets, beach access, newer buildings, growing student presence.
Getting around
Transport
Barcelona's metro and bus network is operated by TMB. Get the T-jove pass — €40 unlimited for 90 days if you're under 31. The city is famously bike-friendly with Bicing public bikes and dedicated lanes. UB, UPF and IDEC campuses are walkable from most central neighbourhoods; UAB is a 35-minute commuter train from Plaça Catalunya.
